Bush heeft spijt van zijn oorlogstaal
Aan boord van Air Force One erkende president Bush tegenover twee verslaggevers van de Britse Times dat het niet verstandig was dat hij na 9/11 zulke strijdlustige taal bezigde. Het wekte de indruk van ,, a guy really anxious for war”, zegt hij in het artikel. ,,I think that in retrospect I could have used a different tone, a different rhetoric.”
In een langere versie benadrukt Bush het belang van diplomatie in de internationale krachtmeting met Iran over het nucleaire programma van dat land: hij valt zijn critici zelfs aan omdat ze niet genoegb zouden inzetten op een multilaterale benadering. De Times schrijft: ,,Mr Obama’s proposal to speak directly to the Iranian President, he suggests, will undermine the careful diplomacy Mr Bush has pioneered in the past few years. ‘I believe when people get in and take an assessment of what will work or what won’t work in dealing with Iran, they’ll understand the wisdom of having not only our friends and allies in Europe at the table but also China and Russia.’
Gevraagd of zijn land ,,is ready for a black president”, antwoordt Bush: ,,I think the fact that the Democratic Party nominated Barack Obama is a statement about how far America has come.” Maar hij voegt er meteen aan toe: ,,Having said all that, it’s going to be important for the American people to figure out who can handle the task of the 21st Century. It’s a challenging job.”
