Op het weblog van Google staat vandaag een bericht over een nieuw initiatief van Google, Knol geheten. Knol staat volgens Google voor unit of knowledge. Het doel van Knol is het delen van kennis. Het zoekbedrijf nodigt momenteel mensen uit om artikelen te schrijven over onderwerpen waar ze veel van afweten. Als genoeg mensen meedoen zou Knol een concurrent van Wikipedia kunnen worden. Volgens het Google-blog staan bij knol de auteurs in het zonnetje. Bij Wikipedia, dat ruim 2,1 miljoen Engelstalige artikelen bevat, wordt de naam van de auteur niet vermeld bij de artikelen. “The goal is for knols to cover all topics, from scientific concepts, to medical information, from geographical and historical, to entertainment, from product information, to how-to-fix-it instructions. Google will not serve as an editor in any way, and will not bless any content. All editorial responsibilities and control will rest with the authors. We hope that knols will include the opinions and points of view of the authors who will put their reputation on the line. Anyone will be free to write”, aldus het Google-blog.
